Three times the devil tried to get Jesus' eyes off the prize and to get the Son of God to trade our lives for a short-lived taste of power and glory (Matthew 4:1-11). Each time, Jesus saw the challenge as a test of His dependence on His Father. When tempted to use undue force, break the rules, or cut corners to satisfy shortsighted goals, Jesus remained faithful. With mental toughness, physical endurance, and grace, Jesus showed that maintaining dependence on God is more important that a short-lived show of dominance.
